In a bid to nurture burgeoning crypto startups, Tencent Cloud, the cloud services wing of the Chinese titan Tencent, has penned a pivotal memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ras Al Khaimah Digital Asset Oasis (RAK DAO), an emblem of the United Arab Emirates’ crypto-centric free economic zone. On March 7, RAK DAO disclosed the signing of the MoU, aiming to explore avenues for mutual growth alongside Tencent Cloud. The agreement, initially focusing on fostering the growth of startups registered within RAK DAO, solidifies the dedication of both entities to bolstering the crypto ecosystem.

The MoU encompasses the establishment of a Tencent Cloud training center within the precincts of RAK DAO, geared towards fostering skill development and education in the burgeoning crypto domain. Additionally, the collaboration paves the way for internship opportunities for entities licensed within RAK DAO and its ecosystem partners under Tencent Cloud.
Hailing the signing of the MoU as a significant milestone, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, emphasized the pivotal role this collaboration would play in elevating the emirate’s status as a technology hub. Echoing this sentiment, Tencent Cloud CEO Dowson Tong expressed aspirations to set new benchmarks in the Web3 space through this collaboration, thereby unlocking fresh avenues in the digital economy.
RAK DAO, unveiled in 2023 as a free-trade zone, serves as a dedicated enclave for virtual asset companies, focusing on pioneering Web3 technologies such as the metaverse, blockchain, nonfungible tokens (NFTs), decentralized applications (dApps), and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). In a bid to fortify its position in the crypto landscape, RAK DAO has embarked on strategic collaborations with prominent entities. In July 2023, it sealed an MoU with the HBAR Foundation to facilitate ecosystem members in harnessing the potential of the Hedera blockchain.
Free-trade zones in the UAE offer entrepreneurs the advantage of 100% ownership of their businesses within the country. These zones operate under distinct regulatory frameworks and tax schemes, offering autonomy from the mainland, save for the UAE’s criminal law. Tencent Cloud’s foray into bolstering crypto startups underscores its strategic shift towards spearheading innovations in the Web3 realm.
